Adrian Price, the head of information security at the UK Ministry of Defence (MOD), has warned that governments could be brought down by operations launched by hacktivists and state-sponsored actors.

During his speech at the Infosecurity 2013 conference, Price noted that terrorist and state-sponsored groups were an increasingly major issue, but hacktivists whose goal was to steal information and leak it to the press were also a concern, albeit to a lesser extent.

“Any of these could affect a military operation or damage the reputation of the government - depending on sensitivity they could even bring about a vote of no confidence in parliament, taking down the current regime,” Price said, cited by V3.

The MOD cyber security chief says that the government is currently working with the private sector and academia on mitigating the risks posed by cyberattacks.
