UIQ 3.3 Unveiled, With Opera Mobile 9.5 and Widgets Support

- Sony Ericsson and Motorola phones to get a better software platform

By: Florin Troaca, Communications News Editor

The UIQ 3 mobile software platform, based on Symbian OS version 9.3, will soon get better with the release of UIQ 3.3, the latest version offered by UIQ Technology. UIQ 3.3 comes with incremental improvements, to keep up with today's market requirements, bringing broad
customization features as well as a better support for operator services.

The enhancements that UIQ 3.3 offers include: a full Web browsing experience thanks to Opera Mobile 9.5 (with its panning and zooming features); Opera widgets, allowing users to directly access Web content; a new UIQ dashboard; Unified Messaging Platform, for an easier communication experience; and Java JSR 248 MSA Fullset, which enables developers to create and integrate a myriad of applications.

"UIQ 3.3 will significantly enhance the options for creating differentiated mobile phones for different segments and different price ranges. Operators are also given the opportunity to promote their services through customized folders and a widget dashboard," declared Mats Barvesten, EVP Product Management and Ecosystems at UIQ Technology.

Among the phones to benefit from the new UIQ 3.3, there will be mainly Sony Ericsson and Motorola models, including the business-orientated G700 and G900 touchscreen candybars from Sony Ericsson, and Motorola Z10, the good looking banana-shaped slider. All handsets to run on UIQ 3.3 will be available starting the second quarter of 2008, so UIQ fans have to wait a bit more until the 3.3 version will run on their devices.

Ulf Persson, Corporate Vice President and Head of PBU Open Platform at Sony Ericsson, said about UIQ 3.3: "We welcome this release and are committed to developing and delivering products on UIQ 3.3." – which is obviously, as it would have been weird for SE not to welcome the new UIQ 3.3.

The UIQ 3.3 Beta SDK (Software Development Kit) is now available for download directly from UIQ's website, found at this address.
