Not a bad figure at all for a technology that wasn't even known before

2012 was the year of the 3D technology, and the tech kind of failed to really gain traction. 2013 was the year of UHD TVs, and these particular displays seem to have done better.

It had a lot to do with how heavily everyone has been advertising them. It's like Full HD is obsolete all of a sudden.

There was also significant wit involved. Makers took great delight in pointing out how much cheaper the latest 4K UHD TVs were compared to those initial monsters, which sold for over a hundred thousand dollars/euro instead of the several thousand of now.

Then again, we've actually seen sub-$1000 (739 EUR) ones, at least prototypes, so great strides have been made.

Given that, it's not so shocking to learn that 3.1 million UHD TVs were shipped in 2013.
