Video game publisher THQ says that it has big plans for the upcoming UFC Undisputed 3 title, aiming to make sure that it deliver enough new content in order to attract all fans of the first game in the series that have been disappointed by the second entry.

The first UFC Undisputed video game was one of the biggest new intellectual properties during 2009 and has been able to sell more than 3.5 million units for THQ, making it the most interesting fighting game franchise for the publisher.

UFC Undisputed 2, which arrived during 2010, was initially set to sell even better, but it disappointed after launch, with just 2.6 million units moved to gamers.

The new game in the franchise will work hard to eliminate any concerns about the second one and recapture the spirit of the first title.

Danny Bilson, who is the executive heading up the core games division for THQ, has told Gamasutra that, “I think we didn't have as big of a differentiation from 1 to 2” and that meant that “the mission for this game was you have to want to buy this one.”

He added, “There's a brand new control set so that everybody can play, and now it reaches to a broader audience. Let's put it this way: Even I can play now... and I also think it's going to play well to the audience. It's a brand new package.”

UFC Undisputed 3 will be including two more weight classes for fighters and will bring in 150 new characters.

There are also new rules, imported from the Japanese version of MMA, for the PRIDE game mode.

The control scheme of the game is also being tweaked to make it more accessible to a bigger crowd of players.

UFC Undisputed 3 will be launched during January 2012.
