Hopes for Homefront and Red Faction

THQ has reported that it has lost money and has seen revenue decline for the fiscal quarter that ended on June 30. The company has previously announced that its results would be worse than expected mainly because of slower than through sales for its flagship release, UFC Undisputed 2010, a game that got glowing reviews but did not manage to attract all fans of the UFC franchise.

Overall sales for THQ went down to 149.4 million dollars, which is a decrease of no less than 38 percent over the same period of last year. The company is also saying that it has seen losses increase to reach 30.1 million dollars, compared with the far smaller 6.4 million in 2009. THQ is saying that UFC Undisputed 2010 managed to sell 2.7 million dollars during the quarter. The problem is that THQ did not manage to partner its fighting game simulation with another strong action shooter release like it did in 2009, when it launched Red Faction: Guerrilla.

THQ does not have any huge franchises set to be launched during this quarter, but the company is eager to talk about what it has planned for the end of the current fiscal year. Volition is now working on Red Faction: Armageddon, a new shooter that will take the player underground in order to battle some weird creatures that the colonists dug up. Kaos Studios is also preparing Homefront, another shooter that has seen a few delays, that is tasking the player with fighting a hypothetical invasion from North Korea Red Dawn style.

Brian Farrell, who is the Chief Executive Officer at THQ, stated, “We are excited about the opportunity for industry growth provided by rapidly expanding online markets and new gaming platforms such as Kinect, Move and Nintendo 3DS. We are developing franchises on these new gaming platforms and we are increasing our investment in online and digital gaming to benefit from these emerging markets.”
