This summer season is especially dry in terms of new game releases, but one title is certainly making a lot of profit off of this “drought” as THQ's
UFC 2009: Undisputed is by far the most played game out there. The mixed martial arts title is making a
big amount of money for the publisher, which has recently boasted 2.9 million copies sold around the world, making its financial quarter a very rich one.
But the game, which has appeared on the PlayStation 3 and Xbox 360, might soon arrive on other platforms in the near future, as more money is good money, at least according to THQ. It seems that the UFC love will soon be hitting consoles like the Nintendo Wii or other handhelds, like the Nintendo DS, the PlayStation Portable and, if development goes well, the iPhone.
While these platforms, except the Wii, aren't confirmed by the publisher, it is a pretty safe bet that MMA fans will get their hunger satisfied on the go. While the porting process won't happen with UFC 2009, the next iteration will certainly have a broader approach in terms of platforms and target customers.
THQ CEO Brian Farrell also took the chance to ask for a few
price cuts in terms of hardware currently available on the market, so that the games published by his company would have a larger potential user base. Farrel revealed, “a price cut would be in order by at least 2 of the 3 manufacturers” of gaming consoles. The THQ exec nominated the “relatively high price point” of the PS3 as a great target for a potential price cut.
Even though he didn't want to say just how much of a cut would be needed for the PS3 to become more popular, the media asked him if a $50 or a $100 one would be recommended by his company. Farrell avoided it and said only that “Something on the higher end wouldn't surprise us.”
So there you have it UFC fans, it seems that the next title won't be limited to the Xbox 360 and PlayStation 3, as THQ is bound to seek out other profitable platforms for the release of UFC 2010.
