For the moment, AC Milan are still playing in the Champions League. As you all know, the Italian Federal Court allowed the Milanese side to participate in the Champions League this season, despite being involved in the Calciopoli scandal. Still, that was not good enough for UEFA, since the European body decided to meet and discuss this matter.
The Italian officials and newspapers waited for yesterday's UEFA verdict, to see if Milan will enter the CL qualifiers or not. And the European officials decided to make the Milanese side wait for a little longer. The meetings were suspended until the 2nd of August, since the members did not have sufficient information to make a decision.
"As far as the position of Milan is concerned, the Panel took note of a report submitted by the UEFA Chief Disciplinary Inspector on the question whether it would be appropriate, due to the particular circumstances, to admit Milan to the 2006-07 UEFA club competitions. Following this report, the Emergency Panel has decided to further examine whether to admit Milan to the 2006-07 UEFA club competitions", said the UEFA statement.
The Milanese side can't really do anything about it, except for preparing for the CL qualifiers. They are one of the seeded teams for the 3rd round qualifiers that will begin on the 8th of August, and that made Carlo Ancelotti call all his players back in training. Since most of them were on vacation - the Serie A begins in late August - they will have to get ready for the European Cups sooner than expected.
AC Milan, who was awarded with last season's Serie A title (2004/05), is the club that suffered the least after the Calciopoli scandal. The team only received a 30-point penalty for the last season and will be deducted 8 points in the new Serie A season. Also, they are the only club not to appeal the latest decision made by the Italian Federal Court. If UEFA will give them the go-ahead, Milan will join Chievo Verona in Champions League's 3rd qualifying round.
