You can't use other SIM cards with the new handheld device

AT&T has confirmed that all PlayStation Vita 3G units sold in the U.S. will be locked to its own network, meaning owners can’t use other SIM cards with it.

The PlayStation Vita will be released next month all around the world, with potential customers being able to choose between a standard-priced Wi-Fi model or a slightly more expensive 3G one.

We already know that the 3G Vita in the U.S. will use AT&T data plans to offer either 250MB or 2GB of data traffic a month, but it seems that PS Vita owners won’t be able to try out other carriers.

According to AT&T’s Embedded Device President, Glenn Lurie, who talked with The Verge, the Vita will be locked to AT&T service. This means owners of the handheld console won’t be able to use SIM cards from other carriers in the U.S. or when going to other countries.

Seeing as how Sony’s deal with AT&T is exclusive in the U.S., expect 3G models sold in other countries to be locked to certain carriers as well.
