U.S. Cellular's branded Galaxy S device, the Samsung Mesmerize is about to receive its long-awaited Android 2.3 Gingerbread update.

Since the last major software upgrade, Android 2.2 Froyo that was rolled out back in March, the carrier was silent regarding the possibility of a future Gingerbread update.

However, in the last couple of months several Mesmerize owners reported that they have already received the Gingerbread upgrade on their devices, which proves the fact that Samsung is working on Android 2.3 update.

Furthermore, U.S. Cellular confirmed recently on its official Facebook account that it is already working to bring the Gingerbread update as soon as possible.

We are working to bring you the Samsung Mesmerize Gingerbread update as soon as possible. We will update you all as soon as we have more information!”

There's a high chance that the update will be available via Samsung Kies Mini desktop software, just like the latest major Froyo upgrade, but it can also be pushed OTA (over the air) to those who prefer to wait a bit longer.

Obviously, Android 2.3 Gingerbread will bring the Mesmerize solid enhancements in comparison with the older 2.1 and 2.2 versions of the platform.

At first glance, the UI will be sharper and more crisp with new color schemes and other cosmetic changes.

In addition, application and power management has been improved, as Gingerbread now provides better insight into apps running in the background, and how much memory and CPU time they are using.

Other improvements and new features included with the Android 2.3 are listed below:

Faster performance: - Multimedia content now has a lower CPU consumption rate, while support for more powerful 3D Graphics enables an enhanced mobile gaming experience.

Upgraded usability: - The user interface has been improved, enabling faster access and control and a more intuitive user experience; - Users will also benefit from improved copy-and-paste functionality.

UPDATE: It appears that Gingerbread for Samsung Mesmerize is now available via an upgrading tool here.
