Mobile phone carrier U.S. Cellular has just announced the upcoming availability of a new Android-based mobile phone on its airwaves, the HTC Hero S, a device that emerged into the wild a while ago under the name of HTC Kingdom.

The new mobile phone is based on Google's Android 2.3 Gingerbread operating system and features the HTC Sense user interface on top of it.

The wireless carrier touts the upcoming device as capable of keeping its customers connected with various social networking sites over the Internet, so that they could stay close to their friends and family at all times.

The mobile phone packs a large 4-inch touchscreen display, Super LCD panel that can deliver a qHD resolution, and features both a 5-megapixel photo snapper on the back, with auto focus and video recording capabilities, as well as a front camera for video calling.

The sleek and stylish HTC Hero S runs on Android 2.3 (Gingerbread) with HTC Sense, which helps keep customers at the center of their social world by bringing together all the different ways they communicate - from calls to IMs to status updates.

The handset will feature a price tag of $199.99 with the signing of a contract agreement and after a $100 mail-in rebate. It requires the purchase of a data plan. The carrier did not offer a specific release date for the new mobile phone.

At U.S. Cellular, it will be accompanied by two other appealing devices, the HTC Wildfire S and the HTC Flyer tablet.

“We're excited to give our customers even more choices by offering these cutting-edge devices,” said Edward Perez, vice president of sales and marketing operations for U.S. Cellular.

“Our associates' commitment to helping each customer find the right device to organize and simplify their life is one of the reasons we have the happiest customers in wireless.”
