Well, you can hardly call it "desktop" since it has a huge case and eats as much power as 10 normal PCs. But if you need the power that 40 cores can deliver, than Tyan
is the one for you. Especially if you use software that is capable of multithreading and dividing tasks, the 256 Gflop PC from Tyan may be an alternative.
TyanPSC launched the Typhoon 600 in order to obtain the maximum of performance from the small space. The monster PC is quite large in size, something like 3 PC cases put together. It features 10 Cloverton CPUs (Xeon 5310, working frequency of 1.6GHz) resulting in a total of 40 cores. Multiplying the number of CPUs with a maximum TDP of 80W, you'll get almost 800W only for the fully loaded CPUs. Add up 20GBs of FB-DIMMs and a whopping 1.25 TB of storage space and you'll understand why this is a monster when it comes to computing but also when you think about your power bill. 3 600W PSUs are used to keep the current running through the Tyan motherboard.
Tyan also offers T-650RX which can accommodate 40GBs of Ram and 2TBs of space. As a comparison, the price for the similarly powered 20 Woodcrest CPU PCs is about $24,750. Expect to pay more or less the same amount for the Cloverton based PC.
