Two Women Suffer Extreme Allergic Reactions to Hair Dye

Allergic reactions to hair dye are rare, but they do happen

Women dye their hair at home all the time, and have been doing so for many years. Yet, this does not mean that they should ever ignore the instructions on the package, as allergic reactions to the same product can still appear – and have terrible, even disfiguring consequences, as two women in the UK can testify from their own painful experience.

Carla Harris, only 15, and Susan Taylor, 55, dyed their hair at home using home kits from L’Oreal and ended up in the hospital, one with her head swollen to twice its size and fearing she would choke on her own swollen tongue, the other with burns on her face that have left horrible scabs. Carla’s mother has already filed a complaint asking for a ban on PPD, the ingredient that has generated much controversy because of its potential of causing severe allergies. PPD is already banned in France, Sweden and Germany, several British media outlets inform.

“It’s disgusting that this chemical is in there. Carla’s eyelids were puffed up so much she couldn’t see. She has only dyed her hair once before and she was alright then.” Mrs. Harris, a reception manager at a GP surgery, says for the Daily Mail. “When I put the dye on my head it felt really itchy. The next morning I started taking antihistamines but then the side of my head started to swell. It’s not right that they are allowed to put PPD in these dyes if it can do this to you. I’m never going to dye my hair again.” Carla also says after her painful experience.

Susan Taylor, though, was not as lucky as Carla to walk away unscarred from the emergency room. Although she’s been using hair dye since her teen years, and mostly the same brand, she had such a severe allergic reaction that her face is still covered in scabs that make her ashamed to leave the house. Nevertheless, she does not blame L’Oreal for the incident, but used her own case as a learning lesson to all women who don’t do the skin allergy test before applying the dye. “I want this to serve as a warning to other women. The instructions told me to test the product against my skin for 48 hours before applying it but I only did it for 24 hours because I’ve used it before without any problems.” she says.

L’Oreal, on the other hand, is unfazed by the incidents, albeit supportive of Taylor. “We are totally committed to ensuring that our products are safe and that our customers can use them with absolute confidence. Allergies to hair colorants are extremely rare but can occur for a very small number of people. Mrs. Taylor’s experience shows how important it is to carry out a skin allergy test 48 hours before using the colorant each and every time, following the instructions clearly displayed on our packaging.” a spokesperson for the company says in a press statement released shortly after word of the two incidents got out in the media.

These companies do NOT care about anyone this happens to, they say it is RARE. WTF liars. They KNOW their products contains TOXIC crap in it and they DO NOT CARE. They ONLY care about PROFIT. They should drink what they put in their products and if they do not get sick or die, THEN, and ONLY THEN, sale the stuff. All these companies need to be boycotted until they quit poisoning everyone!

I am suffering from a reaction from Loreal's dark auburn hair dye. My scalp, ears, neck, face, back, and upper arms are burning.

I called the 800 number on the Loreal box, they weren't interested in helping me -- only asking me if I had taken the 48 hour pre-test. (No - I've colored my hair for over 20 years and never had a problem) I felt like they immediately went into "get evidence so she can't sue us" mode. I don't want to sue -- that's not why I was calling. I was calling for HELP.

I asked her, "Please, do you have any suggestions of what I can do or take to make this stop burning?" No -- they can't give any advice other than contacting your own physician. She did offer to pay my doctor bill if I did end up going to the doctor, and is mailing me a refund for my box of hair color.

But what I WANTED was for her to tell me what I could put on my scalp to make it stop BURNING! :(

They shouldn't make this product if it can hurt people.

Comment #2.1 by: sassy on 14 Oct 2011, 20:24 GMT

they should at least tell you on the box...that is can cross sensitize you to everything in the WORLD!!!!! too.....like it did me...i can even wear lipstick anymore...or use deodorant......should be outlawed like in Europe!

PPD should be outlawed

I have suffered two aggressive allergic reactions that both left me with a badly swollen and deformed face, a horrible rash and hard skinned blisters that itch and burn for days on end until they burst. The first time was caused by a L'Oreal hair dye purchased off the counter at a supermarket, the second by an eye brow tint done at my beautician. Fearing my past experiences I went to my hair dresser for a patch test on my arm before attempting to dye my hair again. The next day my arm doubled in size and the patch that was used to test the dye turned red with blisters. All of my arm turned a dark red and started to itch. I was given injections and anti hystamines as well as anti biotics. It 's been three days now and the patch full of blisters is only getting worse as each blisters seems to grow onto the other until it bursts. I have done some research and it seems I am allergic to PPD (contained in most dyes) and that this was initially triggered off by a Henna tattoo I had done a couple of years ago. Henna tattooing on the streets and PPD should be banned. My doctor has advised me not to risk dyeing my hair as it could cause swelling of the tongue or throat and that would cause death

i have also broken out in an allerigic reaction from using box hair dye. i have a very itchy rash on my scalp, neck, chest, and upper arms and scabs on my scalp. my question is: is there different ingredients in professional hair dye as opposed to box dye? can anyone help?

Comment #5 by: natasha on 25 Oct 2009, 11:57 UTC reply to this comment

i did a skin test on a garnier hair dye and my whole neck and part of my face swelled up, on the packet it said not to use the product if you have ever had a black henna tattoo. I had a henna tattoo done when i was younger and came up in third degree burns which lasted about 2 months. I want to know what the link is between henna and hair dye, please can somebody help me? also, will i ever be able to dye or bleach my hair, any responses much appreciated, thankyou.

I used a Superdrug semi permanent dye on my roots at midnight last night and within minutes had a strange tingling on the roof of my mouth, immediately followed by a tight chest and slight dizziness. Headache and nausea followed. No rash, just a pink bump or two. My head started to warm up and my ears burn. I knew I had to rinse it off straight away - not easy when you are dizzy. After rinsing quickly, some of the symptoms lessened but they are still making me feel ill 15hrs later. So much so that I'm going to miss a ZZTop gig tonight (which is why I was putting the hair dye on in the first place!).

As it was midnight I couldnt phone my surgery, but when I had a similar reaction 2 months ago (not to a hair dye but to the sap of a tomato plant which is part of the deadly nightshade family) I was told that headache and nausea arent part of an allergy. Well sorry, but its definitely part of mine, as last night again proved.

I am hoping these horrible symptoms and the waves of utter tiredness will go in the next 24hrs, as they did with the unexpected tomato plant sensitivity. I want to know where these big companies get off using substances banned in other countries, putting health at serious risk. And does this mean I'll have to go round looking like a witch without a broomstick from now on in, with my roots on show? Is any hair dye safe? If products with PPD are banned in France, Germany and Sweden, why is the EU allowing it in Britain?

the same horrible Reaction to the Clairol Nice and Easy Haircolor, my ears swoll up 3 times their size, the skin on my neck, ears burned off,and my whole Body broke out in a bad Rash, oozing Blisters.we should all get together and sue those Companies for Compansation. We been suffering horribly. That Ingridient called PPD is already banned in haircolor products in Germany,France and Sweden, it causes terrible skin reactions and can even cause Cancer.Thhose Companies DONT care, they making Billions while we suffer. If You Too are thinking of suing, please email me : Angela_maria137@ymail.com. Together we can do it!

I had two hair dyes and iI developed a severe allergic reaction the product I had used were the Garnier Products and it was so severe that I am so scared to dye my hair again and it has been two years since this incident but I really want to style and dye my hair but feeling too afraid still I wonder what would be the best way to get a dye product that would be good for me.,

Hi!

I used two hair dyes at one time to get red for the top of my hair and black for the back part of my hair....I have been having tingling, numbness, and pain in my left arm. I thought it was a pinched nerve, but now I am thinking it started right about the time I colored my hair. It's been about 2 months now and not getting better. The numbness was only down to my elbow, but now is all the way to my fingers, and my thumb is staying numb all the time now? Do you still have this problem with your body??

I had an allergic reaction in December. I went to the ER twice, was given shots of a corticosteroid twice. It took over a week to see the swelling reduce. I have developed asthma, which my doctor linked to a reaction to PPD. I am in the middle of getting a refund from L'Oreal on medical bills. Go to your doctor and have them look at you now.

i have used hair die about 8 times in my life 6 times lor'eal the colors were black,blond,brown,2 burgendys, and a lighter red. then 2 revlons, blue blacks. i have never gotten a alergic reaction with lor'eal but with revlon i have both times after using the lor'eal 2 times (not all in same timing) i used a revlon then got an alergic reaction. then i dyed my hair again with lor'eal (later in time) 4 more times no alergic reaction then used a revlon 3 days ago and got the same alergic reaction again! my scalp was itching along with any other part of my body that the hair dye had touched even as washin it off. but mostly my face neck scalp and ears badly . then i started to swell and i started to brake out , and got huge painful balls behind my ears all from revlon...

FINALLYYYY SOMEBODY ELSE HAS GOT THESE HORRIBLE KNOTS BEHIND THE EARS! This is the second time I've used Loreal and both times I've had the same reaction. The first time I thought it was that the product was for white people's hair and too strong for my weaker black people hair. ;-( Afterward, my scalp was really VERY dry and itchy and I noticed these painful knots behind my ears. The color was deep and rich and really a nice blue black though. :) So months later, I tried it again, thinking that first time was just a fluke. BUT THIS TIME, the rash is SEVERE, my scalp burns terribly, my neck is stiff and sore, I have hard round knots on either side of my neck behind each ear, I can barely lift my head, my scalp is so tight and swollen. Both my ears are swollen to double size and red. My skin all over my body in random spots is itchy. I will NEVER use this product again.

i had mt hair profesionally dyed 4 days ago. we did do the patch test and i did not react. Now after going to the e.r. yesterday my face is still horribly swollen i tryed to wear a hat on my way to the e. r. but my head was swollen so bad that the hat just sort of sat on the top of my head.I broke out in full body hives, my eyes were nearly swollen shut (as they still are today) my scalp was weeping badly but that seems to have subsided.my neck, head and face Are grotescly swoolen im still itchy and im missing a lot of work . i read on another web site were a lady had posted a comment regarding another womens compaint of an allergic reaction and it was commented that" obviosly this woman did not do a patch test" I gnorant comment. they should have better wornings of reactions to ppd and ther sevarity and that the reaction my still be severe if the customer passes the test. At this point I just want my old quirky face back. this is soooo not worth it.

It is obvious that many problems are being caused by these chemical poisons head sores-scabs
swellings and pain. People are also looking for remedies to eleviate the damage which these poisons have caused. It would be good to see a doctor or dermatologist list some helpful suggestions for peoples suffering-Perhaps the government watch dog who is supposed to check these poisons(banned in many countries) would like to comment.

I just left the Er room. I used nice and easy hair touch up. ten minutes. It burned my scalp, stuff coming out of my head, my face looks big, swollen, eyes sore, head sore, forehead huge, scared me really bad. Has this happen to any of you? I am over 50 and just wanted to use the 10 minute touch up, didn't know it was going to do this much damage. Thank goodness for Emer rooms.

I went to a clinic and they said said rush to a ER room so I did. This was so scary!!!!

I am just a new addition to the list of hair dye's horror show. I dyed my hair black with Clairol and I am suffering. My symptoms include intense itch everywhere my hair touches including my back and behind my ears and my scalp is scabby pustular bumps that scab over and new bumps are appearing and spreading. I have been to the clinic and was prescribed a cream. The cream didn't work and went to my regular doctor which looked at the area and confirmed that I was allergic to the hair dye. She prescribed a cream that was stronger and steroid. Nothing worked!!! Help!! I just got home from the Emergency Room and this doctor prescribed an antibiotic, anti-itch pill and Prednsone a different steroid. My head is covered, with bumps, scabs and forming pusticular lesions behind my ears, neck, and down my back. My eyes and shape of my face have not been affected yet but who knows. The burning, pain, and itch is awful. I am allergic to the PPD also that is in the hair dye and have always dyed my hair. I have had this problem for two months now. I will return to the doctors office or ER in I have blood poisoning which I could get following a infection that goes into my blood stream which I would notice a red line that travels to my heart. Hopefully the medicine that the doctor prescribed tonight at the ER will work. I don't think that they should sell unsafe products to us the consumers and we should fight back with a great big law suite. Everyone get together and lets sue the bastards that did this to us......

I think I am having the same allergic reaction. My face is broken out in red patches. The dermatologist is puzzled but definitely feels it is linked to the root kit I used by Loreal.

I am joining your group or hair dye allergic reaction. I have never in my life been allergic to anything. I used Revlon hair dye and ended up in the ER today. I dyed it on Wednesday, had horrible itchy scalp and some burning around my hairline but didn't think much of it, as I have sensitve skin. It was when my forehead, nose and eyes started swelling that I realized it was definately an allergic reaction. Today is Sunday. Antihistimines didn't do anything.. They gave me steroids, I hope this works. I am completely mortified and look like a freak. I was also told at the ER to wash my hair with cleansing shampoo and use cold water, as hot water opens the pores and the color will just keep seeping in. This sucks.

My 19 year old dyed her hair and broke out with sores throughout her scalp. Glands behind her ear and along her jaw line began to swell and became very tender to the touch. Facial numbness

I used Schwatzcoff (sp) 7 years ago after having used this product for many years, and the allergic reaction was the most horrible experience I have ever had to encounter. My eyes swelled up and I couldn't see, my head was leaking from blisters which were also all over my ears, my face blew up like a balloon (I was unrecognisable) and the scarring on my face took months to subside. I took legal action but really to no avail. I received $2000 ($1000 of which had to be paid to lawyers) and really no apology at all from the company in question. This is disgusting and unacceptable the products that are contained in this lethal mix called 'hair dye'. I was not amused and now have to research every product on the market to make sure there is going to be nothing that will react the way it did with this product. I am so scared to use anything other than a mousse I found that is only temporary BUT SAFE.

Comment #20.1 by: Boricua in Ypsi on 04 Apr 2011, 23:50 GMT

I guess they should make a true list of symptoms because there is a common thread here. I used the Clairol Radiance, professional product. Two days later, I was at the ER, with the weeking scalp, swollen scalp and face, generalized hives. My ears had started ringing and hurting, my arms were feeling weak and my throat was swelling. I had swollen, painful glands behind my ears as my body fought infection. By golly, I've never been seen as fast at the ER! 20 minutes and I was on my merry way with the first dose of Prednisone in my system and Rx for antihistamines and antibiotics. It's been nearly two weeks and I'm still itching, crazily. However, it seems my remedies helped ward off some of things I read here. Also, I researched further. I learned that I should have applied 2% peroxide to my hair to finish oxidizing the dye and stop it's advance. I did that on day 4, a little too late. What seemed to help the most when the scalp was raw, was taking an aloe leaf, cutting out the gel and putting in the blender with Aveeno (colloidal oatmeal) and some water; I'd then apply to my scalp. That calmed my scalp and the good feeling lasted hours. I also started eating papaya like crazy, it is an anti-inflammatory and helps in tissue healing. It also has more vitamin C than any other fruit. So my healing appears to be going very well. Except my scalp is peeling and itches, itches. I had Hyper-IgE at one point and the allergist told me to take 2 Zyrtec daily, I'm doing it now, plus taking Benadryl. Washing my hair with Baby Shampoo was OK, but I used a little Pantene conditioner, and that gave me a reaction too. It's like everything now causes a reaction in me. I don't want to sweat because it itches more. And I'm tired and weak. Really, we make other things illegal, why are we still exposed to this PPD if it seems so many people have reactions? I understand all of the cases on this site may have happened regardless; you can be allergic to many-a-thing. However, it seems like PPD has a little more history as a noxious agent than your average peanut!

I used a Revlon black hair dye twice in my 15 year old daughter and both times it made very hard sores in her hair with pus leaking out of it. I took her to the doctor and they gave her a special shampoo and some pills for the itching. I will never use this product again. It made her hair come out in the spots it leaked at.

Comment #21.1 by: marie on 09 Jul 2011, 17:23 GMT

I just used some revlon hair color for the first time the other day and shortly afterwards started experiencing headaches and a burning feeling on my scalp. Then red, itchy bumps appeared on my forhead
Scalp and eyelid. I have used l'oreal before with no problem so I thought revlon would be about the same, but I guess not. Won't be buying revlon again.

anyone have numbness and tingling from using hair dye? My left arm has pain, numbness and tingling. Dr. thinks it's a pinched nerve, but can't find anything to support that idea. I bet these hair color companies are getting kickbacks from the medical companies. There is no reason for hair color brands to give people such a severe alergic reaction... with technology today??? please

Comment #23 by: BukkBlakk on 29 Aug 2011, 18:59 UTC reply to this comment

Yes do an allergy test for 48 hours to see if you are FINALLY sensitized enough to the PPD to have the reaction. If its so rare and so safe why does PPD have an MSDS sheet showing as dangerous as any other toxic chemical? Once youre sensitized you cant go back. There is a difference between hay fever and open oozing sores, blisters, itching, swelling, pain and sometimes death. Your box packaging should have a big waring lable on the front with PPD being explained to the unknowing consumer. PPD is a skin contact sensitizing chemical that can mess you up bad. The hair companies know this as any other company using a lab. Thney know the danger. They dont care. If I was putting poison in someones food without telling them Id go to jail but seems like the hair companies have enough money and lobbyists to grease all the right palms to allow attempted murder to be sold in every box.

I've been colouring my hair with chemical dyes about twice a year, different brands; and henna nearly every month for touching up. 2 weeks ago, I used Bigen hair colour for the first time. About 20 minutes after the dye was on my hair, I started getting a headache. Had to wait another 10 minutes before I washed off although my head was aching more and more. That entire night, the headache didn't fade and I had trouble sleeping. Thank goodness the next morning it was gone. I had never had reaction like this before. Reading this site made me feel lucky I didn't have worse reactions. I didn't know there could be so many allergies. I thought of trying Revlon again as I've used it before and it was fine, but now that I read the comments here, I'd better not take anymore risks.

Comment #29.1 by: Jane on 12 Nov 2011, 01:02 GMT

cas, Yes. But that is because your not in a well ventilated room. Either put a mask on your nose or set by an open windows when your hair is being colored. The whole family got a headache from one person doing the color. It was actually a migraine. I don't understand why you have to do the allergy test each time even if using the same product makes no sense. I notice in the U.S. hairdresser don't do an allergy test especially if the don't do the roots. I am not a doctor. I don't know why you couldn't used a Medicaid shampoo if you get those sores.

It was horrible i had to wash my hair like 3 times a day i couldnt sleep i got depressed and the doctors couldnt tell me what it was because i had got a new tattoo on the back of my neck, after 3 and a half weeks of tablets & creams it eventually went away, 5weeks later i dyed my hair again and the same happened it was agonny 3 weeks again of it and stupid of me done it another time, the same happened 3 weeks of it!! This time it was worse horrible weeping neck&ears i had too wear huge bandages around my neck it was embarrassing. Now its close to my birthday so i got a dye that people with allergies use, i put a small circle on my arm and its huge now & swollen, really itchy and burnt ive been applyin a steroid cream but its still getting big! Im terrified after reading about young girls dyein their hair and dyin!! Ive read about it and apparently its PPD? Why isnt this banned every1 is saying lots of people are having severe reations to this! Im young and love my hairdye but now im terrified of it! Anything could happen, i just hope that people who read this have a skin test 48hours before and if any redness or itchy burns appear bin the product, what ive learned is my life is better than having nice hair. I am just getting over a very bad reaction to a hair dye i used , its been 2 weeks since i used it i still have sores in my head and neck and my ears are still scabed , my eyes lids also swelled . I cant stress enough that PPD needs to be band . The people who make and sell these hair dyes DO NOT CARE as long as they are making money , something has to be done . I have used hair dye for years and all of a sudden you can get a reation , i can only tell people never to use them full stop . Iv been looking for a dye i can use but none are safe they all contain PPD how is this when its so dangerous . If i had my way i would ban every one , this would make them make a safe dye lets face it we are in the 20th century why have we no safe dyes WHY .

I wish I had read it before- to day I had the worst experience of my life when my hair was colored using L'Oreal hair dye- - my head started to itch just after 10 minutes so the salon girl washed my hair- and after that my whole body was so scratchy I could tear my skin, my face was swollen and got scabs, my hands were shaking and I got severe palpitation. Please take care or get it from Germany and other countries where PPD is banned.
But please tell me how should i color my hair in future?

The same thing happen to me. I was 15 when I dyed my hair but I used revlon midnight black. (Im 16 now)The reaction was terrible. When I started dying it right away my head started burning. It felt like someone put a torch to my head. Then I washed the dye out and it started itching like crazy. Day later my head was weeping and later my eye's got swallon. I wish they would make hair dye that would garentee no allergic reaction. I dyed again but supposedly "all natural dye" and I still got a reaction. I hope it doesn't happen when I bleach it.

I dyed my hair a few days ago and thought I'd got away with my history of bad reactions I was wrong, the last time I had a bad reaction I was put on steroids they helped, it's perticulary dark hair dyes that do it to me, right now I haven't slept because my hair and ears are weeping my forehead has swollen up and it's now moving down my face I've taken allergy tablet that have seemed to move the infection down my face which is a good thing because its happened before I know what happens, I never learned from the first few times but now I can safely say I have. My hair is what upsets me the most it's okay for a couple of hours then it constantly weeps. I think there should be much more awareness on hair dyes as they are very dangerous, I will not be using hair dye ever again I'm appalled that it hasn't been banned in the uk and other countries. I urge people not to dye there hair even if they do patch tests, I don't. But I've heard slot of stories about how you can still get allergic reactions. A change of hair colour is not worth the pain of these reactions it's horrible I hope to get better soon. As it's causing me not to sleep.

I dyed my hair dark at the beginning of dec 11, three weeks later i had an allergic reaction. My GP said it wasn't the hair dye as symptons hadn't occured until 3 weeks afterwards, i was then severley ill for 3 weeks following and hospitalised over the christmas and new year period. I had a number of things including tonsilitus and stomach immflamation BUT THEY STILL DO NOT KNOW WHAT THE SWELLING AND RASH ALL OVER MY BODY WAS? My face looked hideous and the itching was insane. Could this have been from the hair dye even three weeks afterwards?

I think Carla is absolutely right! PPD should be removed from the dyes! I dyed my hair for the first time on Sat, January 14th and right now as I type I' m suffering from a more severe allergic reaction. There are rashes all round my forehead, ears & neck. And worse still, my head & eyes are swollen. Initially I looked like a cartoon character, now I look like a boxer. I went to the emergency room and I've been placed on prednisone & benadryl.

I have done a few patch tests recently that came up sore, red and slightly swollen so am now scared to dye at all. Having read through these comments I realise that I have been allergic for ages. I have had sore spots after dying and lumps and bumps that come and go and vary in size. I have always had some burning immediately after applying the product which subsided. I also experience numbness in fingertips and toes sometimes and headaches, which I am starting to think could be within 2 days of each patch test being done. Does anyone have episodes of detachment too? I've never had a henna tatoo, but have been dying my hair since I was about 14. I've been using L'Oriel Excellence for years. I'm 40 now, have lovely long dark hair and am regularly told I look like I'm in my 20's, but I'm afraid the gray hairs are going to have to take over - I'd rather have my health.

I'VE DYED MY HAIR SINCE I WAS A TEENAGER AND NEVER HAD A PROBLEM. I DYED MY HAIR WITH CLARIOL NICE AND EASY JAN 27TH AND HERE IT IS FEB 7TH AND THE PROBLEM IS NOT ANY BETTER. MY HEAD AND EARS ARE SWOLLEN AND WEEPING. MY CHEST NECK AND BACK ARE COVERED WITH WELT LIKE HIVES AND ITCH LIKE CRAZY. I LOOK HIDEOUS AND DON'T WANT TO LEAVE THE HOUSE. I HAD TO CUT MY HAIR (EASIER TO MANAGE WITH THE NASTY WEEPING SORES ALL OVER MY HEAD)

IT IS TERRIBLE. I DON'T SEE HOW THIS PPD CAN BE SOLD IF IT CAUSES THIS MUCH PAIN AND DISCOMFORT.

I'VE FOUND FRESH ALOE HELPS. TAKE A LEAF AND SKIN IT, BLEND IT UP AND ADD A LITTLE WATER. ITS SLIMY AND NASTY LOOKING BUT THE AFFECT IS SO WONDERFUL IT COOLS OFF YOUR SKIN AND CALMS THE ITCHING. ALSO TEA TREE SHAMPOO IS GREAT IT COOLS DOWN THE BURN AND DISCOMFORT. COLD COMPRESS WILL HELP BUT IT DON'T LAST LONG.

I suffered from an extreme allergic reaction. Had to go to hospital by ambulance and receive treatment before released. Tongue swollen, eyes beet red, throat swollen, struggle breathing, and all in a manner of 30minutes. Color was still in hair being processed. I have the er bill to prove it!

Hi I dyed my hair 3 days ago and my scalp is wet from the weeping of the blisters on my head and around my hairpins. I also have swelled glands behind my ears that causes me to have a stiff neck and shoulders. My eyes are swelled and cheeks. I used garnier. I just can not figure out why nothing can be done about this. I am 50 and have dyed my hair hair since I have been 17. I have not for a few years and never will again. This is terrible to hear all these companies do not care about our health or safety but just making there almighty dollars. I will not buy other products that any of these companies use again. I do not want to support companies that do not give two cents about us. Boy I am angry they can put their test spot where the sun don't shine

I recently found out that Im allergic to Clairol Nice and Easy Black/Blue Black. Has anyone else had these reactions: severe hayfever, sinus, sneezing, itching face, sore, sore sore throat, itchy eyes, anxiety, sleeplessness? I havent dyed my hair in months since I discovered this. Id been dyeing my hair for years and have always had allergies but its only the last 2 times that the reactions were this severe. Ive no idea how to start finding another dye to which I wont have this reaction to

Comment #45 by: fair for everyone on 05 Mar 2012, 22:12 UTC reply to this comment

They need to just bann this ingredient all together. Products are suppost to be safe for EVERYONE! The fact that these companies know that there may be a reaction in some people is just not fair. Whether they do the allergy test or not. If a small percentage is affcted, it should not be able to be allowed. These big companies are not concerned about health and well being but about how much $ they can make.

I used a loreal temporary Colour, six washes it was supposed to be and I have the worst itching, weeping and swollen head. You are not supposed to get any reaction from a temporary , I will never use it again, did you get scarred from it, please help?

Comment #47 by: Kimbo on 20 Mar 2012, 11:35 UTC reply to this comment

I dyed my hair with Loreal's Excellence. The next day I had red itchy eyes, itchy scalp with sores and by the evening I noticed some swelling in my face. I woke this morning with huge lumps, face disfigured and yes the massive lumps behind my ears. Been to hospital and got some strong antihistamines. The Nurse I saw said he had seen a lady earlier this morning and one last week with the same symptoms. All used loreal and all the colour black!! This PPD need banning and quickly.

I colored my roots with black hair color. My scalp and ears are scabbed and oozing, and my eyes are almost swollen shut, as my face is swollen. I've had this problem before, only using black hair dye. When this happened before, I thought it was because I left the dye on too long. But this time, I was careful about the time. I usually use brown hair color, and never a reaction. This only happened the two times I used black hair dye. My 15 year old son was horrified when he came home from school and saw me. He begged me to never color my hair again, and just please go natural, gray or not. He said he would rather see me with gray hair than what I look like right now. Bless his heart. If i do ever color my roots again, I will use that temporary stuff.

I had a bad allergic reaction too I've noticed that after u get out the shower and wash your hair with cold water and put on aloe Vera to the burns to your head you'll feel better and the burning will go away and it will dry out the blisters on your head

I coloured my hair using nice and easy yesterday and today my head is burning and covered with blisters that itch. It's even on my arms, shoulders, face and neck.. Will an antihistamine stop the itching?

I go to salons for color, little by little,I had a rash around and above the ears and at the hairline base of my neck. I thought it was a combo of hairdye and too soon after shampooing. Well, the last time I had it dyed, I became just a weeping rash of mess around those areas.Clearly, I have an issue. My daughter called me last week, had been to the salon for color, same thing.(Different Salon too.) She is still suffering from 24-7 itching. I use peroxide on cuts,no events.Im thinking PPD also. There is no need for PPD. We are reproductive, why cant they make things that dont hurt us?

Comment #50 by: missbea on 02 Apr 2012, 20:34 UTC reply to this comment

I touched up some grey areas until I could get time off work to go to the salon.I used Clairols Medium Golden Brown. Scabs all over my neck and around my ears and the top of my head. I did a patch on it before hand,48hrs, no issues. So 48 hrs doesnt always tell the story.I had used clairol all thru college and as a teen. Salon dye doesnt bother me.

Allergy Test or not, we as a society should reconsider the reasons we put ourselves at risk at all. Why have these chemicals at all. The allergies are not as rare, as many go unreported. Loreal and others also don't mention bio-accumulation as a direct warning to dye users. Is this form of beauty really worth the risk?

Comment #51.1 by: Christina on 01 May 2012, 05:37 GMT

I too have had a severe allergic reaction to these harsh and highly dangerous ingredients in hair dyes.
Have been dying my hair off and on for years without any obvios allergis reaction besides a bit of a dry, flaky skalp at times.
Then the other day I used the new Loreal Sublime Mousse, ( Pure Dark Blonde), which is a permanent hair colour because I wanted to look nice for a special Birthday dinner.
Didn't react immediately but by the next day large weeping blisters and scabs had come up all over the back of my neck and behind my ears, as well as down the right side of my inner arm. Looks like I have been burnt in a fire !
They are intensely itchy, swollen and and painful. I have also developed many small itchy crusty sores on my scalp and around my hairline. My eye-lids also swelled up.
Have applied antiseptic cream and a mild cortisone cream but these awful weeping sores aren't going to go away anytime soon.

Ironically just saw an advertisement on TV for this LOreal hair product which has won best hair colourant for 2012!!

They seriously need to futrher test a lot of the chemicals in these hair dyes as they are obviously seriously harsh and harmful.

I Am from the UK & 3 days ago I dyed my hair with L'oreal Casting Colour Darkest Brown , I did the 48 hour patch test & had no reaction so carried on & dyed my Hair However The Morning after I dyed my Hair a patch in my hair & along my forehead the skin feels Numb & Ive had a slight Headache , Ive never had this before so I'm Putting it down to the Hair Dye , These symptoms seem mild compared to some of the horrific stories Ive read on here & I was wondering if anyone else had experienced this Numbness. Im horrified that these Companies who make the Dyes Have not found a way to Make the products safe for People to Use by Now there seems to be Hundreds if not thousands of People Having a reaction to it & all they seem to be doing is raking in the money without thinking of the harm there products are doing to people. Also does anyone know of a hair dye for Dark Hair that does not contain this ppd ??? thanks in advance :-)

I have had a reaction at home from Clairol and then a stylist at the salon had me try there color Rusk and I had a reaction, I did do a patch test no reaction, but still had one 3 days after the color was applied. I have had large lymph nodes and dry itchy ears, numb ness in my arms and buzz in my each. My scalp had welts and was red as fire. My head itched and itched. mY hair was weeping and painful to move. I did have trouble breathing and had rash all down my back on on my forehead. I this should not be able to be in products. All these stories should be put on you -tube. The public should be aware this is a possibility. No one knows, consumers, doctors, young people, We need let the the public know.
