Opera 12 promises to be a landmark release for the browser maker, at least technologically. It will be the first version to include not only hardware acceleration, but also WebGL support.

However, WebGL is not something that a regular user is going to need or stumble upon, unfortunately, quite often on the web.

While Google has made probably the biggest move in switching WebGL from promising to technology to reality, with its hardware accelerated, MapsGL, much of what WebGL can do is still seen, again unfortunately, in demos.

So, as not to disappoint, here's one of Opera's own tech demos for WebGL. A slightly interesting thing about it is that the demo is running on an embedded Opera version for set-top boxes.

And if this doesn't satisfy your appetite for graphics splendor "modern web" style, you can check out this rather impressive particle effects interactive demo that's bordering on 'art' rather than technology.
