In an interesting but puzzling move, two tablet manufacturers have reportedly set up production for their products in one of the most unlikely places you could ever think of, Haiti.

We all known this is a place plagued by natural calamities, so what exactly is the scheme behind this act? Im not exactly sure but, Surtab and Handxom SA have both started the production for 7-inch Android tablets which in turn are going to be sold to Haitian governmental establishments, says Phys.org.

The tablets will also become available for pick-up by customers through the Digicel. The two companies were founded by Europeans (coming from Belgium and Denmark) aiming to revive the Haitian economy, that has been struggling to keep afloat since the 2010 earthquake.

The two companies rely on the country broad’s labor pool and relatively cheap working force to create some visible Android tablet alternatives.

Surtab’s first tablet, the Sur7 is powered by a 1.2GHz dual-processor and is even lighter and thinner than the Nexus 7 (at 50 g / 0.11 lbs). When it arrives on the market it will sell for $99 / $72.
