The VAIO series of mobile computing devices from Sony is one of the most well liked and appreciated laptop and notebook families of products and now, unlike most manufacturers Sony comes with a back to basics design and hardware specifications that are affordable even for the average computer users while being powerful enough for most home and office applications as well as casual gaming.

The NR series of the Sony VAIO family of products will come in two colors and two distinct hardware specifications, the lower end machine being painted with a silver finish while the higher end one sporting a dark grey or black casing. The entry level Sony VAIO NR laptop will come with the version
number VGN-NR11SS while being built around the Intel mobile computing platform as it sports an Intel Core 2 Duo T5250 central processing unit which runs at a standard clock speed of 1.5GHz, has 2MB of L2 cache memory and a 667MHz frontside bus. A performance boosting feature of the VGN-NR11SS is the presence of 2GB DDR2 of random access memory while the Intel made integrated graphics solution X3100 does little to improve the general impression of a low end machine. A 15.4 inch widescreen glossy display implementing the X-Black or X-Brite technologies is also present.

Apart from the Intel processor and integrated graphics solution and chipset, Sony also used the 802.11 a/b/g wireless controller made by Intel, while the storage department is represented by a 200GB hard disk drive which should provide more than enough storage space for the average user. On the connectivity side the new VAIO NR comes with four high speed USB version 2.0 ports as well as a FireWire one, together with a VGA out, headphones and microphone connectors. Another good part of the NR laptop is the fact that it sports a Memory Stick and SD card reader as well as an external ExpressCard expansion slot.

The Sony VAIO NR11Z/T model is the higher end laptop as it comes with a little bit faster processor while being painted in a darker color. This machine comes with an Intel processor too, the Core 2 Duo T7250 central processing unit which runs at 2GHz, has 2MB of L2 cache memory and supports an 800MHz frontside bus. Just like the lower specifications machine, the Sony VAIO NR11Z/T model comes with 2GB of DDR2 random access memory too while using the very same chipset and integrated graphics solution, the Intel X3100. Apart from the faster processor and the external paint job, the two NR laptops are virtually identical. Globally, the two new VAIO machines are designed to meet the basic requirements of the mobile computer users without offering out of the ordinary performance or features but the price tag is said to be pretty low too as these are going to be marketed as budget versions of the much more powerful fully fledged VAIO laptops.
