The app will source the actual music from SoundCloud, Rdio and others

Twitter started out as a simple service, but it's looking to transform into a media platform, perhaps because it's already been made into one by its users. Twitter is betting big on card apps, apps that live inside tweets.

But it's also doing its own thing, it launched Vine, a short-form video sharing service which has been quite popular so far.

Now, Twitter is moving into music. The company acknowledged that it acquired the music discovery service We Are Hunted, it actually bought the company a while ago.

There are several signs that Twitter is launching a music service this weekend, possibly today. It's no coincidence that the Coachella festival is this weekend.

There's a music.twitter.com page live, but it doesn't do anything for now. But at least some people are already using the Twitter music app.

As for what this music app will look like, it's unclear. It does seem like the app is focused on music discovery, it makes sense too since that's what We Are Hunted does as well.

The actual music will come from services like Rdio and SoundCloud. We Are Hunted founder Stephen Phillips has been tweeting under the #NowPlaying hashtag, so that's probably how the Twitter app works.

The Twitter seems to be called "Trending Music" and has some "interesting" features, it can tweet for you, useful for sharing, but it can also start following people for you. Again, presumably this is because you can start following people from inside the app.

In any case, the app is coming soon so there's no need for much speculation. One thing is clear though, Twitter is very serious about expanding its empire and has actually done quite well so far.

It may be that soon enough, it's the media companies that now love Twitter, start worrying about Twitter encroaching on their territory, like it happened with Twitter developers.
