Accessing social networking sites from a mobile phone is something pretty common these days, and the impressive growth Twitter has seen lately in terms of mobile usage is meant to prove exactly that, it seems.

According to a recent report from the social media destination, a number of around 46 percent of its users are enjoying Twitter on their mobile phones.

This increase is the result of the availability of a mobile version of Twitter, as well as of various clients for mobile operating systems, including Twitter for iPhone, Twitter for BlackBerry (developed by RIM), or Twitter for Android.

“As we had hoped in April, these clients are bringing more people into Twitter, and, even better, they are attracting and retaining active users. Indeed, 46 percent of active users make mobile a regular part of their Twitter experience,” the company notes in a post on its blog.

It seems that the total number of mobile Twitter users went up 62 percent since mid-April, not to mention that a number of around 16 percent of all new users start their experience on mobile devices (up from 5 percent in the beginning).

“Our Twitter for iPhone and Twitter for BlackBerry clients are now two of the most popular ways to use Twitter. This may not be surprising. What may be more surprising are the other top ways people use the service,” Twitter notes on the said blog post.

Moreover, the data they collected at made official shows that there are many people accessing Twitter from their handsets without the use of a smartphone application for that, but through the use of mobile Twitter web site and/or SMS.

Third-party clients are another popular way to access Twitter, and there are quite a few of those available for the various mobile operating systems out there.

There are a wide range of applications that mobile phone owners can install to access Twitter or just view tweets, it seems, and the social network says there are almost 300,000 registered OAuth applications.

“It’s great to see this kind of variety and growth in the ecosystem as it moves beyond basic Twitter clients. These new services help people get the most out of Twitter, contributing to user growth and new business opportunities—both of which are critical to the long-term viability of the ecosystem,” the company concludes.
