The what’s-new for Twitter iOS app version 3.3.3 reveals that requests to have the QuickBar removed have been answered. The option to Retweet and Quote tweets has been placed in same action menu on the iPhone version of the app which also brings a bag of bug fixes.

In a post on the official Twitter blog, the people maintaining the service recall that last month’s update to Twitter for iPhone and iPad contained a number of features that “made finding friends and sharing information on Twitter even easier,” including a new feature they wanted to test named the “QuickBar”.

“…originally conceived to help users discover what’s happening in the broader world beyond people they already follow,” the function was regarded as “a potential means of in-app notifications for new @mentions, DMs, and other important activity.”

But few really appreciated its addition and, in fact, said they wanted it out of the way.

“Rather than continue to make changes to the QuickBar as it exists, we removed the bar from the update appearing in the App Store today,” the Twitter staff notes.

Without directly admitting that customers simply didn’t want the QuickBar, the developers say, “For now, we’re going back to the drawing board to explore the best possible experience for in-app notification and discovery.”

Twitter upholds that there are still significant benefits to increasing awareness of what’s happening outside the home timeline, suggesting the QuickBar will make a comeback, perhaps in a more intuitive form.

Finally, they cite evidence of the high usage metrics for the QuickBar to support their claims, and sign off.

Twitter for iOS works with iPhone, iPod touch and iPad and is designed for use on both small and big screens, meaning you don’t need to download separate versions of the app.

It requires iOS 3.1 for now, and can be downloaded from the link below.
