Twitter has just released a new update for its Android and iOS client, which fixes some crashing bugs, but most importantly, adds a new notification feature. The new feature is meant to recommend interesting accounts and Tweets to other users.

“If you’re like me, you occasionally feel like you’re missing out on some of the day’s great Tweets, or that you’re the last to find out when someone awesome joins Twitter. We wanted to tackle that problem.

“With this new feature, you’ll receive personalized recommendations when multiple people in your network follow the same user or favorite or retweet the same Tweet,” explains Venu Satuluri, senior software engineer, search and relevance, on the company’s blog.

According to developers, Twitter for Android and Twitter for iPhone users will get the new personalized recommendation feature via a push notification.

However, both Android and iOS users will be able to change their settings at any time, as with any notification. The recommendation notification feature can be turned off or on with the “Recommendations” toggle in the notifications settings.

Basically, the application will now notify users when multiple Twitter users decide to follow a certain account or when they retweet the same tweet. Although for some this might sound like a bit of a spam, developers claim it’s not and you can always turn the feature off if you find it too intrusive.

Apart from the new recommendation feature that will be slowly rolled out to Android and iOS users, Twitter devs have confirmed that the latest update includes some fixes for crash bugs, but no additional details have been offered on the nature of these problems.

You can now download Twitter for Android 4.1.8 for free via Softpedia or you can update via Google Play Store. Keep in mind that the application is fully compatible with Android 2.1 and up.
