The new Twitter for Android 2.1 application is available for download with some highly appealing new features included into the mix, such as push notifications and support for multiple accounts.

The development team behind the application notes that the new features were added to the mobile software as a result of user feedback, and that they are some of the most requested capabilities that users wanted in Twitter for Android.

Push notifications is the first major new feature that Android users can enjoy in Twitter for their handsets now, complemented by support for more than one account, and newly updated home screen widgets.

“First, we now offer push notifications. Push notifications let you instantly receive Twitter updates – no matter what you’re doing on your phone,” Twitter explains in a recent blog post.

Users will have to select automatic refresh in the account settings, and then choose to receive updates for Direct Messages, @Mentions (either from the people that the user already follows, or from anyone else), and for Tweets.

“You can also now use multiple accounts on Twitter for Android without ever logging out. It’s easy to switch between accounts to discover and share what’s happening in the world,” the company explains.

As stated above, users will also enjoy a new appearance of home screen widgets, along with a range of other improvements and fixes that the application comes with.

Available as version 2.1.0, the new Twitter for Android application can be downloaded from the Android Market here for all devices that run under OS 2.1 or newer.

All of the other features that the Twitter client for Android already delivered are there, enabling users easily stay on top of what interests them the most.

With this app, they can view trends, search to find what people are saying, see suggested users in categories like fashion, entertainment and travel, browse their interests, and more.
