Group direct messaging and a new mobile video experience

Whether it’s breaking new barriers or trying to play catch with competitors in the social networking space, Twitter is constantly evolving with new features. Next up: group direct messaging and video tweets.

Twitter is probably feeling the sting of Facebook and every other social network out there that can be used as an instant messaging platform. So they’re rolling out private conversations for groups.

Group DMs for extended convos

These are basically DMs that work as hangout convos, and the cool thing about it is that you don’t necessarily have to follow or be a follower of someone or other. All you need is acceptance to that group. You know, like in real life. When you’re added to a group, you’ll receive a quick notification.

There’s a video embedded at the bottom of this article which explains the feature at length. Hit the play button to make a better idea of what Group DM is all about.

Capture, edit and share videos from your Twitter app

When the new version of Twitter hits the App Store and Google Play, you’ll be able to shoot video on the spot, make quick edits, and whisk that footage away for your followers to see instantly. The service is live, but no one (except for privileged types like Neil Patrick Harris) can use it. An example of how Twitter video works can be found embedded just below the fold.

“We’re rolling these features out to all users in the coming days,” Twitter confirms. “Starting now, you’ll be able to participate in group conversations other people start with you, and watch any of the public videos users post.”

Both of these features were already confirmed, mind you. Now they're just official. It would have been even nicer to play with them as early as today.
