A well-connected Apple pundit claims to have heard that Twitter is planning to discontinue development for the Macintosh client, with no updates planed up ahead for OS X.

The news comes from MG Siegler, who tweeted yesterday, “Word is that Twitter made the call today: Twitter for Mac is done. They won’t kill it outright, but no further updates. Goodbye, old friend.”

Twitter Inc. recently made some changes to its platform, hindering the creation of third-party clients on the Mac. Which makes this move (if indeed confirmed) all the more strange. What are Mac users going to tweet with from their computers, Notification Center?

Tweetbot for Mac is an option, but the service is in beta right now, and its developers have already signaled some hurdles because of Twitter’s API change. Hopefully, Twitter is only ending development of the current application, not Mac development altogether.
