Twitter started out as an SMS service, few people remember that or even knew about it, back when it was called twttr. Apart from adding a couple of vowels, Twitter added quite a lot of features to the site and, importantly, the platform.

However, it continued to support SMS access for areas with no internet connection. The service is free in many places, thanks to deals with carriers. Today, Twitter is available via SMS in many parts of the world.

In fact, thanks to a couple of new deals, Twitter is literally available across the globe, as the company has partnered with satellite phone operators Iridium and Thuraya.

"Now, even if phone lines and the Internet are inaccessible — for example, in a war zone or after a natural disaster — people will be able to share news and stay informed via Twitter," Twitter wrote.
