It has more than 200 million registered users, but a hard time getting people to stay

Twitter has been touting its growth for years now. And, there's no denying that Twitter is becoming an increasingly powerful entity online. But it's not as big as you'd think, the site has revealed its active user numbers for the first time, 100 million, and they're a bit short of expectations, perhaps.

This is because Twitter has more than 200 million registered users, meaning that more than half of its users don't visit the site at least once a month.

This confirms what most people suspected, many come to the site, register, but lose interest quickly. User retention is pretty bad.

That said, few companies would complain about 100 million users and Twitter has plenty of growing left.

"Now, 100 million active users around the globe turn to Twitter to share their thoughts and find out what’s happening in the world right now," Twitter announced.

"More than half of them log in to Twitter each day to follow their interests. For many, getting the most out of Twitter isn’t only about tweeting: 40 percent of our active users simply sign in to listen to what’s happening in their world," it said.

However, Twitter has a rather large core audience that is highly engaged. About 50 million people log into Twitter every day, that's more than double from last year, Twitter says.

What's more, a lot more people visit Twitter than just registered users. The site sees some 400 million unique visitors each month. That's just for the site and Twitter.com saw only 250 million visitors as early as January this year.

But plenty of people use the mobile apps to, more than half of active users come from a mobile app rather than via the site. Overall, Twitter is still seeing healthy growth, so the numbers will change soon. The site's biggest concern though should be getting people to stick around.
