The app doesn't work at all. It's simply used to trick internauts

Twitter, Facebook and Google+ users are advised not to click on posts that advertise an application called Instagram for PC, which is allegedly an emulator that can be used to access the service without a phone.

According to Symantec, Instagram for PC is a bogus app that does nothing except for tricking unsuspecting users into taking part in various surveys which help the scammers make money via affiliate programs.

Victims are lured to surveys in two ways. First, after they install the application, they’re told to download an additional .dll file from the Web. Instead of the .dll file, they’re taken to a survey site that promises various prizes.

The app doesn’t work at all, but since users don’t know this, they might be tempted to “activate” Instagram for PC. Yes, you guessed it, the so-called activation process also consists of a survey.

Unfortunately, posts advertising the Instagram for PC app have been shared by over 4,000 users on Twitter and Facebook, and by more than 2,000 users on Google+.

For the time being, the program doesn’t appear to have any malicious functionality. However, that can change at any time, which is why internauts are advised to avoid it.
