Superheroes need to communicate

Cryptic, which is now owned by Atari, is hard at work polishing up Champions Online, its MMO that should be launched soon to allow players to become superheroes and live out their comic book-related fantasies.

And one of the elements that the developer plans to emphasize in the fresh game is communication and social networking. In this spirit, Cryptic has announced that the next beta update for Champions Online is set to add Twitter support.

A new State of the Game blog post dated July 1 says that “We’re really excited to get in-game tweet testing out to our beta players. This feature is in initial testing stages and will most likely have issues. Beta players, please keep in mind that you are still under an NDA while testing this feature! For more information on how it works, check this week’s patch notes.”

Twitter is what specialists call a micro blogging platform, which limits the messages (or tweets) that can be sent out to no more than 140 characters. The popularity that the platform has enjoyed in the recent months is mostly due to it being easy to use and integrate with blogs and websites.

A lot of game developers have Twitter feeds at the moment and they have even begun to be used to make rather important videogame-related announcements. In Champions Online, a player will apparently need to add “/tweet” in the chat window in order to send a message to their already set up Twitter account.

Champions Online is also getting translations to French and German soon, while Cryptic is willing to say that most of the beta is going well and that new features are being tested and balanced to make sure that players will have as good an experience as possible when the game is out.
