The first day of the Twitter Chirp developer conference wasn’t just about boasting of the service’s impressive stats, there were a couple of launches as well. One feature that should have a great impact on how you interact with Twitter is the @anywhere platform. Announced last month, the platform is now available for anyone wanting to integrate Twitter features on their sites.

“Last month we previewed an incredibly simple set of web tools which enable partner websites to easily integrate Twitter functionality into their site experience called @anywhere. The idea is that web users will be able to engage with existing Twitter features from all of their favorite sites. Today, we're happy to announce this service is live and ready for anyone who wants to build a little Twitter into their online experience,” Twitter Co-founder Biz Stone announced.

Developers can start playing with the tool on the newly launched Twitter Developers site. Full documentation is available and also code snippets to get started as soon as possible. The embeddable tools allow users to log into Twitter, follow a Twitter conversation right on the site and interact in other ways. The idea is to enable users to connect with Twitter without leaving the site they are on.

The platform has been in testing with a number of media partners, but it is now available to everyone. It shouldn't be long until you start seeing Twitter features on any number of sites. It remains to be seen if it will prove as popular as other similar platforms, notably Facebook Connect.

The parallel with Facebook Connect is inevitable, the functionality is very similar in @anywhere. Facebook Connect has worked out great for Facebook and the platform is everywhere today. Facebook’s size along with Connect’s popularity have made it so that you can’t afford not to have it on your site. Twitter is more than four times smaller than the giant social network, but its influence shouldn’t be dismissed, so it may prove itself a worthy competitor to Facebook Connect.
