Russian and Turkish are the latest additions to the list of supported languages in Twitter. Users can now experience Twitter in nine languages, most of which have been added through crowdsourced translations. Volunteers and contributors have been working on these last two languages for the past two months or so.

"Starting today, you’ll be able to use Twitter in Russian and Turkish. We added these two languages to our Translation Center about two months ago," Twitter announced.

"Thanks to the fast, high-quality work of our translators, both languages are now available on twitter.com and mobile.twitter.com," it added.

"You can change your language from the settings page on twitter.com. Once you set your language to Russian or Turkish, you will be able to browse your interests and find interesting Russian and Turkish accounts to follow," it explained.

Twitter began its translation efforts about a year and a half ago when it started adding support for several European languages. Until then, Twitter had only been available in English and Japanese, the latter due to its strong following in the country.

It added several more languages, the last being Korean earlier this year, for a total of seven. Shortly after that, Twitter announced that its revamping its Translation Center making it easier for users to contribute.

In February, Twitter announced the new tool and the fact that it added support for Turkish, Russian and Indonesian in the Translation Center. The first two languages have already been translated, only a couple of months later.

There are now nine languages to choose from, but the number is sure to grow since Twitter plans to move faster with the help of the new tool.

Twitter is still expanding internationally and is seeing huge growth in some countries. While early adopters will make do with the English language version, if the site wants to gain a big mainstream audience, translations are crucial.
