Posterous Spaces will continue to work, but it's unclear for how long

Twitter and Posterous have announced that the latter is being acquired by the former. Posterous is a blogging platform catering to more advanced users who want ease of access, especially on the go. It recently pivoted to become a group discussion platform.

The company boasted about 15 million unique monthly users only a few months ago. Clearly, things haven't been going so well, once a Tumblr competitor, it seems it has failed to get too much traction.

While the service is not shutting down for now, things don't look good. Twitter wanted Posterous for the team and nothing else.

"The opportunities in front of Twitter are exciting, and we couldn’t be happier about bringing our team’s expertise to a product that reaches hundreds of millions of users around the globe," Posterous wrote on its blog.

"Plus, the people at Twitter are genuinely nice folks who share our vision for making sharing simpler," it added. Twitter had equally nice things to say about the Posterous team.

When it comes to the product though, while both Twitter and Posterous say that the service will continue to be available "without disruption," shutting it down seems like a possibility even a likely one, judging by their wording.

"We’ll give users ample notice if we make any changes to the service. For users who would like to back up their content or move to another service, we’ll share clear instructions for doing so in the coming weeks," both Posterous and Twitter said.

It is likely that the fate of Posterous Spaces hasn't been decided yet, but it doesn't look like Twitter cares much about it.

It's unclear what Twitter plans to do with the Posterous team, while they're clearly a talented bunch, the two products don't overlap much. It could be speculated that Twitter is working on its own "long form" tweet service, but that would be quite a leap for the company which has stayed true to its core product for years now.
