Instant messaging app for avid fans of the microblogging service, Twitter

TwitChat, a messaging app for Twitter fans, is now available as a free download in the App Store. TwitChat lets you privately and instantly message, group chat, and send pictures to your followers with no limits on character count.

TwitChat is the brainchild of three students at the Georgia Institute of Technology, who also just so happen to be the winners of the 2011 Undergraduate Georgia Tech Business Plan Competition.

They wanted to expand the functionality of Twitter beyond its microblogging design, by enabling users to communicate through Twitter instantly and privately, and in small groups.

"Twitter is an incredible social media tool, and we wanted to make it even better," said Marcus Thomas, TwitChat CEO. "TwitChat allows you to instant message other Twitter users, adding a new and fun way to communicate on the already popular social network."

A solution for avid Twitter fans, TwitChat lets you chat with a close friend, have a group conversation with your family, or even connect with a follower you don't know anything about.

It supports pictures and emoticons, and it lets you send friend requests to build your TwitChat friends list.

Users have complete control over how many followers can message them, and they can check mentions or even start a conversation directly from a tweet via the Twitter timeline. You can also set up a more exclusive timeline populated only by your TwitChat friends.

It’s also a full-fledged Twitter client – tweet, retweet, reply, view profiles, etc.

TwitChat is now available as a free download via an ad-supported version of the app. The Pro version is still $1.99 and doesn’t feature any nagging ads.

The app is compatible with iPhone 3GS, iPhone 4, iPhone 4S, iPod touch (3rd generation), iPod touch (4th generation) and iPad and requires iOS 4.0 or later.
