It seems Michael Pachter was right

Despite his previous denials of the existence of such a game, David Jaffe revealed Twisted Metal for the PlayStation 3 at the E3 show. It was the last title to be announced by Sony yesterday during its press briefing. Just before the end of the show, Jack Tretton, the president and chief executive officer of Sony Computer Entertainment of America, said that his team had one surprise left for the show.

A teaser video in which two taxi drivers argued whether there had been a racing-game series released on all of Sony consoles appeared on the screen. It ended with the arrival of Sweet Tooth, the main character of the Twisted Metal franchise, on stage portrayed by an actor. David Jaffe also climbed up on the stage and announced that he was developing the PlayStation 3 version of Twisted Metal, making it the longest running PlayStation-exclusive franchise.

Two multiplayer gameplay demonstrations were also shown, detailing various new features of the title. The first one was a classic deathmatch mode, while the second involved a new type called Nuke. New vehicles will be included, the most surprising addition being a helicopter. Gamers can compete against each other either online, the game hosting up to 16 this way, or offline, through a four-player split-screen.

The new mode, Nuke, is constructed like a twisted take on the capture-the-flag style of multiplayer. Two teams are pitted against each other, having the task to destroy a statue of the opposite faction leader that is suspended in the air. The players must work together to capture the leader and then to feed him or her to a rocket vehicle of some sort that will fire rockets at the target. The first team that manages to damage the statue three times wins. Twisted Metal is set to be released sometime in 2011.
