The new Twisted Metal game that’s set to appear later this month has been delayed in Europe, according to its lead designer, David Jaffe, who also mentioned that violent content from the North American edition has been cut in order to meet the stricter European guidelines.

Twisted Metal is one of the first big PS3 games of the year and plenty of racing game fans have awaited the return of the series for many years.

After the pretty decent multiplayer demo that was released last week, designer David Jaffe has delivered some bad news, at least for European PS3 owners.

According to him, Twisted Metal has been delayed in that territory due to “localization taking a touch longer” than it was originally anticipated. While Twisted Metal is set to be released in North America on February 14, the European version might arrive, at least according to Jaffe, in March.

The designer also confirmed on the NeoGAF forums that several changes had been made to the European game in order to comply with the harsher limitations imposed on video games. While Jaffe expressed his disapproval, he assured fans that the cuts weren’t that big, elaborating on two examples.

The first is for a cinematic sequence, which now fades to black just before a girl stabs one of the main characters, Sweet Tooth, in the eye. The second affects gameplay, as the Meat Wagon vehicle no longer shoots a living guy strapped onto a gurney that’s fitted with dynamite, instead using just a dead body.

“I hate cuts the original game,” Jaffe added. “At the same time, players in SCEE territories will be able to play the same game and dive into the same Twisted universe as SCEA players. It's a touch different but I and the team still stand just as proudly behind the SCEE version and are very excited that we'll be able to meet up with TM players the world over online and share the game together.”

If you don’t approve of such cuts, the North American version of Twisted Metal can always be imported into other territories, as PS3 games aren’t region locked.
