Amazing news for fans of the cult TV series “Twin Peaks” from creators David Lynch and Mark Frost! After some teasing online over the weekend, confirmation has come that the series will be getting a third season on Showtime no less than 25 years after it ended its run on ABC.

Do you remember what Laura Palmer told Agent Cooper in their final scene together in The Red Room? “I will see you in 25 years,” she said. Well, we will see them all again precisely 25 years after the show wrapped.

Lynch and Frost are both on board, with the former set to direct every one of the new episodes, Deadline confirms.

“Twin Peaks” fans will finally get closure after all this time

Showtime says they only have a 9-episode season in the making, which could mean that we shouldn’t expect a fourth season as well. In other words, picking up the story again after all this time is solely for the purpose of tying up loose ends and finally offering fans some form of closure – and, most importantly, answers.

The first season of the show aired in 1990 and opened to a staggering audience of 34.6 million viewers. Ratings decreased with the second season, when Laura Palmer’s murder was solved mid-season, but the show failed to offer answers to even more important questions that had popped up as the series progressed.

When ABC pulled the plug after season 2, things were just getting more interesting and this earned “Twin Peaks” cult status. It is, to this day, one of the most intriguing and chilling series ever to air on television, so that must have played a very important part in Showtime’s decision to air the much-awaited third season.

“What more can I say – Twin Peaks with David Lynch and Mark Frost on Showtime in 2016!” Showtime Networks President David Nevins tells Deadline. “To quote Agent Cooper, ‘I have no idea where this will lead us, but I have a definite feeling it will be a place both wonderful and strange.’ The mysterious and special world of Twin Peaks is pulling us back. We’re very excited. May the forest be with you.”

Who is coming back?

Mr. Nevins isn’t the only one feeling excited about the return of “Twin Peaks.” Though fans are usually very reticent when it comes to revivals of this kind, be they in television or cinema, with this particular series, things are different.

The fact that Lynch and Frost are on board surely helps a lot in this sense, as also does knowing that they will finally get the closure they’ve been hoping for all these years.

But that doesn’t mean that the endeavor isn’t risky: in order to not “ruin” the original series, the reboot (or call it what you will) has to be up to par with it – and “Twin Peaks” set the bar very high, as you probably know.

An important aspect is bringing back as many of the original cast members as possible. So far, Kyle MacLachlan (FBI Special Agent Dale Cooper) and Madchen Amick (Shelly Johnson) have hinted at possible returns, but seeing how Ray Wise (Leland Palmer), Grace Zabriskie (Sarah Palmer), and Sheryl Lee (Laura Palmer) were part of the special Blu-Ray 25th anniversary release, it’s a good bet to include them as well.

As of now, we have no official word on who’s coming back and who’s sitting this one out, but more details are bound to emerge in the following days.

Season 3 of “Twin Peaks” goes into production next year, so keep an eye on this space for more. Are you excited about the revival? Let us know in the comments section below.
