That's 28,800 hours every day

YouTube's rising popularity sees no sign of slowing down, at least when it comes to the amount of content being uploaded. Recent numbers posted on the site's blog by Ryan Junee, product manager, show just how much it has grown over the years, as today its community uploads 20 hours’ worth of video every minute.

According to YouTube, the numbers have more than tripled in just two years, since in 2007 "only" six hours of video were being uploaded per minute. This grew to 15 hours in January this year and Junee puts this into perspective, "[that's] the equivalent of Hollywood releasing over 86,000 new full-length movies into theaters each week."

And the rate at which these numbers are growing seems to be increasing, as now, just five months later, YouTube has reached 20 hours of video uploaded every minute. That's 33 minutes of content every second or 28,800 hours per day. These statistics are getting really hard to wrap your head around.

Naturally, YouTube thanked its users, without whom the site wouldn't exist: "We couldn't have built this site without your commitment to sharing your thoughts, experiences, and creativity with each other. We have news clips and full-length shows and movies, music videos and how-to content, sports highlights and animation, short films, homegrown videos, and, yes, all the dogs on skateboards you can watch."

Google also announced a new feature yesterday, one that allows users to make one-click video responses to the clips they’ve just watched. After a video has finished playing all they have to do is click an icon, which will activate their webcam so they can start recording right away. Users could record from their webcam straight to YouTube before but now the process of responding to a video is as easy as it can get. This new feature is one of the things the YouTube team hopes will help them reach 24 hours of video uploaded every minute.
