Onset Technology has announced OnPage, a pager and Priority Messaging Application for iPhone and iPod touch.

OnPage eliminates the need to carry two devices for individuals that need to prioritize messaging beyond email, SMS and phone calls, according to the developers.

Users can simply download the free app from Apple’s App Store and register now to instantly receive two-way paging and priority messaging globally.

The new service brings a more intuitive user interface that mimics the collaborative and confirmatory functionality typical to email clients.

Healthcare professionals
are specifically targeted by the new OnPage app, as Adam C. Marks, director of Business & Technical Operations at RSC New England, explains.

“The healthcare industry is still reliant on what most professionals view today as an outdated technology—the pager,” said Marks.

RSC New England is a Massachusetts-based fertility center.

Marks continued, “Up until this point, our physicians have used a traditional pager to help them keep priority messages distinct from other, less urgent communications. Unfortunately, with a one-way communication system, reliability and responsiveness have always been a concern.”

“OnPage has mitigated those issues for our organization by enabling our physicians to use their smartphones to send and receive priority messages instantly,” said the Director of Business & Technical Operations at RSC New England.

According to the man, OnPage eliminates the need for pagers and follow-up phone calls by providing physicians with an audit trail that the page was sent, delivered and read, thus “shortening delivery and response time during emergencies.”

Although the OnPage app is free to download from the App Store, the service itself is subscription-based.

Currently, there are two pricing plans available for OnPage users - OnPage Personal and OnPage Business. Learn more here.

I don't understand how this is different from say Kik or the upcoming native iMessage app on iOS.

Alerts can be sent via regular phone, email or web page, in addition to the app. It will continue to alert until read.
