Multi-purpose machines like the Acer Aspire Switch 12 are nothing new. These are devices that can be used as a tablet, laptop or even desktop.

But smartphones have been getting increasingly more powerful, prompting people to call them pocket-sized computers. It’s a statement that makes sense, but there’s still a big difference between a PC and a smartphone.

For starters, their design is completely different. However, if you ever dreamed of being able to use your smartphone as a desktop PC, the next Kickstarter project we’re going to be talking about next might help you get your wish come true.

Smartphones can be desktops too

The Andromium Computer Project aims to help users of mobile phones turn their handset into computers. Andromium is basically a complex bundle which includes both software and hardware.

The hardware part is actually a dock that turns your phone into a computer unit and comes complete with USB ports, so users can attach all those PC-friendly peripherals including a keyboard, mouse and even an external display.

The software part is in charge of bestowing a desktop-like UI to the whole setup. Most importantly, users can interact with it by virtue of mouse and keyboard.

Quite interestingly, the creators of the Andromium Computer Platform have taken inspiration from Windows 7 and OS X, cherry picking between the best features of these operating systems and bringing them together under the same umbrella.

Even if the smartphone is placed in the dock, users can still receive notifications and phone calls, so they won’t have to exchange smartphone functionalities for PC ones.

As for app compatibility, the Andromium creators say that your average app is compatible with the platform. On top of that, you get a bunch of Andromium-specific apps.

Wondering what you can do with an Andromium setup? Well for one, you’ll be able to play all your favorite games like Super Smash Bros, GTA or Legend of Zelda. Which is pretty sweet.

Andromium is compatible with Samsung phones

For the time being, the Andromium is compatible with one the most popular Android smartphone models, including the Samsung Galaxy bunch like the Galaxy S3 or Galaxy Note 4. The Galaxy S5 does not fit the dock due to the USB port cover, but the team is working on fixing this issue.

The Andromium Computing Platform is currently gathering funds on Kickstarter, so if you like the project you can visit their page a make a pledge. $29 / €23 will get you a beautifully designed HDMI-charging dock & Andromium OS for your Samsung smartphone.
