Launches discovery toolbar TumbleUpon

Up-and-coming microblogging platform Tumblr has posted some impressive stats for July, along with its claim that it's “taking over the world.” The biggest number, 255 million pageviews in July, does make a splash, even if it may not be entirely accurate. Still, the site is also growing at a fast pace, adding 5,000 new users every day.

“It’s been a month of milestones for Tumblr, and we thought it would be a good time to stop and say: Thank you to everyone for making this possible. […] We can still remember watching your new posts come in one-by-one the day we launched. Now we’re waiting for five new servers to arrive to help us handle the 330 million (that’s 0.3 billion!!) hits and 20 million new posts we’re projecting for August,” founder David Karp wrote.

Some other interesting stats show 50 million visitors last month and 650,000 new posts per day. The data comes from direct measurements by Quantcast and looks impressive but omits some numbers that are, perhaps, even more important, like unique visitors, which the same research firm puts at only 13 million.

Others aren't so generous, though, with Compete showing only 3.9 million unique visitors worldwide and only 68 million pageviews – still, three times as many uniques as last year and 12 times as many pageviews. The site arrived at the 50 million visitors from Google Analytics data, which also showed 20 million uniques. In any case, it is definitely growing.

And to celebrate the growth the site is launching its own toolbar with the very original TumbleUpon name. But the similarities with the social discovery site StumbleUpon don't end here – the functionality is also pretty much the same, namely that it’s used to discover other blogs based on what your friends like. The toolbar has some very familiar features too, like a button sending users to a random Tumblr blog and a “like” button. Still, this isn't such a blatant rip-off as it may seem, as this is just a first release and the functionality is limited to Tumblr blogs. The name might also change if the feature ends up being integrated in the site's Dashboard.
