Microsoft is expected to bring a dark desktop in Windows 10 when the new operating system comes out, and a few screenshots that got leaked in the last few months provided us with a short glimpse of this interface tweak that could be part of the final version of the OS.

And yet, the dark theme is not currently available in the technical preview, so Microsoft could release it at some point in the future, but keep in mind that the operating system is still in development and a lot could change until the final version arrives.

In the meantime, those who like the Windows 10 interface can give it a try with third-party themes that work on both Windows 8.1 and Windows 7, thus bringing the new UI on their computers without actually deploying the new OS.

How to install the theme

The so-called Windows 10 TP Black Aero for Windows 7 is a third-party theme that brings the new UI elements of Windows 10 on your Windows 7 PC, including borderless windows and a redesigned Start menu.

The theme, which was created by DeviantArt user cu88, requires you to install UXTheme in order to patch system files and be able to try out third-party themes. This is mandatory requirement for now and you can't do anything without it.

After that, simply copy all “Theme” folder content to Resources > Themes in your Windows directory on the C: drive, so everything should take just a few seconds.

Once you're done with this, the personalize window available in Windows 7 should let you enable the new theme and try it out on your PC.

If third-party themes aren't your cup of tea, there still is some good news for you. Microsoft will make Windows 10 free of charge for those on Windows 7, so you can also upgrade your system to the new OS without paying for it.
