Truphone, the VoIP-based communications app developed by the company with the same name, has been promoted to version 4.0, which allows the software to take advantage of some of the new additions in iOS 4, the latest version of the iPhone operating system. Among the key additions, the developers note 3G and background calling, the latter being possible thanks to the multitasking capabilities within iOS 4.

“Unless you have been living in a cave over the past few months, you would have heard about iPhone 4, Apple's latest and greatest phone, which went on sale overnight,” the people at Truphone state on their blog. “To celebrate, we are all very excited to announce that we have just upgraded our iPhone and iPod touch applications to take advantage of some of the great new features with this launch.”

The developer proceeds to enumerate these enhancements, starting with 3G calling, which, as simple as it sounds, allows customers to place and receive calls over 3G networks. “This means that you have the option to make calls as part of your data package even when out of Wi-Fi range,” the Truphone staff explains.

Next up, background calling. As noted above, this is only possible thanks to iOS 4 being able to multitask. There couldn’t have been a better time to include the new functionality, the developer suggests, saying, “This has been one of most requested new features from users of our iPhone app.” The company outlines some of the benefits stemming from the new functionality, including the ability to stay on a call, answer, and even call others while running another app.

However, there’s more to Truephone 4.0 than its makers would have you think by reading the latest headline over at their blog. The software now has a new feature called Truphone Instant Messenger. “For the first time, you will be able to chat via IM with other Truphone users as well as contacts on several of the most popular social networking sites, including Facebook, Skype, AIM, GoogleTalk and MSN – all in one place, without having to open up multiple IM applications,” the developers are proud to share with the public.

The iPad iteration is yet to receive these enhancements, although the Apple tablet should be able to run the iPhone and iPod touch counterparts.
