Tropico 5, a city building strategy developed by Haemimont Games and published by Kalypso Media, will be arriving on the Linux platform along with all the other versions.

Tropico 5 is more like a management simulation than a city building game, and is more on the lines of the new SimCity, although the players will control the constructions of the items, not just define the areas like in the game from Maxis.

The developers from Haemimont Games are very good at what they are doing, mostly because they have a lot of experience. You might know them from other games like Glory of the Roman Empire, Grand Ages: Rome, Omerta – City of Gangsters, and of course, the other two previous Tropico games.

Tropico 5 has been announced for some time now and there have been some rumors about a possible Linux version, which have been confirmed by the developers in the announcement for the launch date.

“Start a bright new future for you and your family by moving to the beautiful land of opportunity known as Tropico. On 23rd May, El Presidente has declared that Tropico 5 will be available globally on PC (US retail release 27th May): so make sure you’ve packed your sunglasses and swim shorts.

“The Xbox 360 and Mac versions will be releasing this summer with a version for the PlayStation 4 platform following in autumn. Kalypso is also working on an extensive Steam OS (Linux) version which will release with the respective new hardware,” said the developers in the official announcement.

If you read between the lines, it only states that a Linux version is being worked on, and not that it will be released along with all the rest.

In Tropico 5, players will get to play as the dictation in a very warm country from the 19th century to the 21st and each period will have its own difficulties and interesting aspects. As you might expect, this is a dynasty, which means that the same family will try to remain in power for as long as possible.

It won't be enough for you to be an evil dictator and you will need to advance your country by discovering new buildings, technologies and resources. You will also control a powerful trade fleet, but you will have to discover new land so that you can expand.

The launch date for the Linux version of Tropico 5 is not known, but we will keep you apprised if the developers manage to finish the Linux port.
