No game-breaking intrusions

One of the biggest exclusives the PlayStation 3 is set to receive in 2010 is Heavy Rain, the game that Quantic Dream has been working on for quite some time and that aims to provide the most emotional gaming experience ever seen on a console.

And one of the challenges the team working on the title has faced has been to make sure that the regular elements of console gaming, like the Trophies that have been introduced to the PS3, are not getting in the way of the experience the creators have envisioned.

Guillaume de Fondaumiere, who is one of the co-leaders of Quantic Dream, has told Kotaku that they have worked with Sony to find a way of actually delaying the pop ups, which inform the player about a new Trophy to the loading screen of the game, making sure that they are not appearing in the middle of gameplay as an intrusion that telegraphs the idea this is still a videogame. The dramatic element of the game will thereby be preserved while the player will still have access to their Trophies.

It's an interesting innovation and it certainly makes sense in the contest of Heavy Rain. The title is pretty different from the standard gaming experience, with the clear goal of creating a complex experience, which draws the players in and offers them the emotions that gaming lacked so far.

The narrative will be based around four characters whose lives have been affected by the so-called Origami Killer. Each of them will have a different path to follow and the way the player chooses their faiths can lead to one of the about 20 endings that Quantic Dream has prepared. There will probably be at least one Trophy tied to experiencing them all.
