From forged emails to forged websites, imitating the image of a famous company, it was just a step which hackers easily made.
This time, the forged site imitated the webpage of the Windows Update service and it was designed to lure a great number of Internet surfers who got attacked by a trojan. The webpage was promoted through a very convincing email that had the address and one of these messages: "Update
your windows machine", "Urgent Windows Update" and "Important Windows Update".
Users who accessed the address included in the email and tried to download updates risked the infection with the DSNX-05 trojan, which gave the hackers the possibility of controlling the victim's computer.
Counting on the users' high level of mistrust related to Microsoft's operating systems, the trojan was very "popular" and before the webpage was deactivated it managed to infect a great number of Internet surfers.
If until now, hackers counted on attachments of emails apparently sent by Microsoft to spread a large number of trojans, the new method for attracting victims is related to phishing. It's easy for hackers to redirect the user to a trojan spreading site, and the large number of sites that can be imitated gives them a lot of possibilities.
Users are recommended to avoid any unwanted messages, not to access the included addresses and also to run updated antivirus and firewall solutions.
