The new Trisquel version has quite a few changes

Trisquel GNU/Linux, a 100% free operating system that features a complete selection of applications, has advanced to version 7.0 LTS and brings a number of improvements.

Trisquel GNU/Linux, codenamed Belenos, is based on Ubuntu 14.04 LTS (Trusty Tahr). The developers of this operating system are only using the LTS version of the Ubuntu system as the base. It took them a while to get the new distro on its feet, considering the fact that Ubuntu 14.04 LTS has been available for more than six months, but it's finally here.

Most of the Linux distributions are free and it might seem strange for developers to claim that their Linux OS is free, but there are several degrees of freedom. In the case of Trisquel, things are pretty clear because the distro only contains free applications and nothing proprietary. Also, the Free Software Foundation says that the repositories must also share the same principles, but Trisquel has Ubuntu repos.

Three different Trisquel flavors have been published

Because the Trisquel distros appear at such big intervals, the developers have more than enough time to implement everything they need. They can also customize the desktop so that it looks different from most of the other Linux distributions out there.

"Version 7 of the Trisquel GNU/Linux distribution, codenamed Belenos after a Celtic sun god, has been released. Belenos is a Long Term Support release that will be maintained until 2019.  Editions published today include the GNOME based standard edition, the LXDE mini edition, and the now officially supported Trisquel on a Sugar TOAST edition, designed for kids 0 to 12. It features the Sugar Learning environment and a preselection of educational activities."

"We are also making big changes to the development process, to make it easier for the community to contribute. The new code management website allows users to clone the code, hack and request their changes to be reviewed and merged. This is connected to a whole new continuous integration build system that will keep the distro up to date with less manual intervention," reads the official announcement.

The developers also say that the kernel used in the system is Linux-libre 3.13 (based on the version from Ubuntu 14.04 LTS), the distribution has a GNOME 3.12 fallback for users who want a more conservative approach, and uses Abrowser, which is actually based on Firefox.

More details about this Linux distribution can be found in the official announcement. You can download Trisquel 7.0 LTS right now from Softpedia. This is a Live CD and it should work just fine in VirtualBox, for example.
