The Trisquel GNU/Linux team announced yesterday the release of Trisquel 2.2, codename "Robur." This is the third and last maintenance update for the Trisquel 2.x LTS branch, tracking the releases of Ubuntu 8.04 Hardy Heron, on which it is based. However, this Linux distribution doesn't use Ubuntu's package repositories; instead, it hosts its own, with all the non-free software removed.

The 2.x branch is a long-term support version that will receive updates until mid-2011 and have its security flaws patched until 2013. Since the Free Software Foundation is now hosting a mirror, package downloads will be faster, especially for United States residents.

Trisquel 2.2 brings more than 200 package updates, a cleaner GTK theme and four more languages included on-disk, growing the supported language list to 9 entries: English, Basque, Catalonian, Chinese, French, Galician, Hindi, Portuguese and Spanish.

This release has three variants: the base edition, an educational CD called Trisquel Edu and a "Pro" DVD oriented towards small businesses, all in 32-bit and 64-bit versions.

Key features:

· Linux-libre kernel 2.6.24 · GNOME 2.22.3 · OpenOffice.org 2.4.1 · Trisquel Web Browser 3.0.11 (Firefox rebrand) · The GIMP 2.4.5 · Xorg 7.3

About Trisquel:

Trisquel GNU/Linux is a version of the GNU operating system using the Linux kernel. The goal of this project is to create a completely free system that is easy to use and features good language support. Trisquel's logo comes from the Celtic symbol triskelion, or triskele in English, with the spiral arms being made from the Debian swirl logo. The project was created in 2004 with a sponsorship from the University of Vigo, and by December 2008 it was included by the Free Software Foundation in the list of free GNU/Linux distributions, following a verification process to ensure the promotion of 100% free software.
