The First Beta release of Trinity Rescue Kit 3.3 has been announced by its author, Tom Kerremans. This distribution was created aiming offline operations for Linux and Windows systems like rescuing, repairing and password resetting and cloning. Its final version will be 4.0, the actual variant already containing lots of bugfixes and functionality that were at first conceived for the final edition. Some of the features included in the TRK 3.3 Beta release are:

■ A fifth antivirus engine has been added to "virusscan", Vexira. ■ New and fixed F-Prot from Frisk Software. The binaries and the syntax have completely changed, for which reason 'virusscan -fprot' in TRK 3.2 is as good as broken. The new engine should detect about 40% more viri and even malware. ■ Two rootkit detection utilities have been included: rkhunter and chkrootkit. Both have online update capabilities, but they only look for Unix-like rootkits. ■ Linux kernel 2.6.22.1 added.

Some new utilities available in this version are:

■ Novell Zenworks Imaging, a tool to replicate PCs over multicast. The tool is free but not quite GPL, so it's not included by default into TRK. ■ Seagate/Maxtor Seatools harddrive testing. This is a tool completely outside of TRK that runs under FreeDos.

The developer has repaired some of the bugs, including:

■ booting from USB CD drives was problematic because they are slow in being detected by the kernel and the startup procedure would just race past them. This has been fixed. ■ an updated TRK will not unpack its virusscanners on startup anymore (except when running completely from RAM), but rather on execution of the intended AV engine. This results in faster startup times and makes it a bit lighter for machines with little RAM. ■ additional startup options for PCs with strange ACPI, like the HP 7700 series. ■ manpages for standard linux utilities are now all included. People asked me to have this included, so I did it. Beware that TRK specific utils and procedures don't have manpages. They are available via trkhelp (-l).
