Famous studio Frozenbyte has announced that Linux users can now play the Trine Enchanted Edition, one of the best 2D adventure games made in the past few years.

The Frozenbyte developers have made two games in this series and they have released a few DLCs. The first title in the series, simply called Trine, was very well received by the community and got quite a following.

The studio then released a second game, with much better graphics and controls. These eventually landed on the Linux platform and subsequently on Steam, but the devs wanted to do something even better.

They've managed to remake the first game using the engine and all the other assets from the second title. This is something that very few game developers do, although it's not exactly unheard of. For example, the devs from 4A Games, with their Metro 2033 and Metro Last Light titles, have done the same thing. It's not impossible, just very rare.

Trine Enchanted Edition is free for users who already have the original

Other studios that made this kind of conversion have charged extra for the work, but the guys from Frozenbyte have been very cool about it and they have not made any claims.

This means that if you already own the game original games on Steam, you will get the new Trine Enchanted Edition for free, which is not a bad deal at all.

"Trine Enchanted Edition is a port of Trine to the Trine 2 engine. It adds online multiplayer, midlevel saving, enhanced visuals and improvements to several gameplay aspects. Trine Enchanted Edition is a free upgrade to all who own Trine on Steam. Once out of Beta, we will also release the upgrade to DRM free stores. Trine Enchanted Edition does not replace the original Trine in any way, so Mac and Windows users are able to choose the version they wish to play from the game's launcher."

"All BETA users should be able to play together with each other regardless of their operating system. Please note that the BETA is not yet online compatible with the current release version, so online multiplayer with the Windows players during the BETA is only possible if they are also taking part in the BETA," say the developers on the official website.

In order to access the Beta, Steam users will need to change the status of the game from Properties to Beta. After the download has been completed, you will be able to play the new game.

More details about Trine Enchanted Edition can be found on Steam.
