Verizon Wireless and Trimble announced that Trimble Outdoors would be available from now on with select GPS-capable cell phones from the mobile phone carrier. The application allows the operator's customers to use their devices as full-featured GPS receivers during outdoor recreational activities. Users will be able to get a trip-planning software, as well as off-road navigation and journaling tools for activities like hiking, backpacking, fishing and hunting.

Users are allowed to pre-plan and review their trips online by means of a map-based trip editor as well as by using the Trimble Adventure Planner software. Customers will be able to receive on their handsets fully-guided trips, routes, maps and waypoints, offering them the possibility to use the phones as full-featured GPS navigation devices.

At the same time, the handsets will serve for more than navigation, as users will also receive maps of their locations, track routes with a GPS breadcrumb trail, while also being able to mark waypoints along the way. The coordinates, speed and heading are displayed through a digital compass.

“Now that GPS is becoming ubiquitous in wireless phones, customers are looking for a variety of ways to take advantage of the technology, including using them for outdoor adventures and recreation,” said Larry Fox, business development director, Trimble Outdoors. “Trimble Outdoors provides an incredible opportunity for Verizon Wireless customers to plan trips, experience the outdoors, and share rich GPS tagged multimedia content using the phone they carry with them every day.”

The Trimble Outdoors application also provides users with a means of tagging every taken picture or recorded audio during the journey. In addition, memories can be shared with friends on the Trimble Outdoors' website, where anyone can keep an online journal of their trips.

Trimble Outdoors is available on Verizon Wireless GPS-capable phones like Verizon Wireless G'zOne Type S, G'zOne Boulder or Motorola AdventureTM V750, as well as on devices like LG Decoy and Samsung SCH-u550. The application is available for purchase in the Media Center or the Get It Now section on users' phones. The subscription will cost them $5.99 monthly or $1.99 for a one-day use purchase.

More information on the Trimble Outdoors application and on the supporting phones can be found on the carrier's official website.
