Trillian, an iOS app that helps you organize and stay in touch with your IM and social friends on-the-go, is now free to download and use on any iPhone or iPod touch running iOS 3.0 or later.

Undoubtedly prompted to take action after the iMessage announcement from Apple, Cerulean Studios announced that their application is going free.

Trillian receives push notifications, sends pictures and messages, and optionally synchronizes with Trillian for Mac.

Most notably, in this case, users can also employ Trillian for messaging to save on SMS costs.

So, what’s a developer like Cerulean to do when Apple announces that iOS 5 comes with a free text messaging feature that works on WiFi and 3G? Well, this:

“We’re pleased to announce that Trillian for iPhone is our second mobile application to go free, so head on over to the App Store on your favorite iOS device to get your copy!”, reads the announcement on Cerulean Studios’ blog.

“We’ve fixed a handful of bugs in this build, added a basic chat history viewer, and made major improvements to our networking engine,” the developer adds.

Trillian is now completely free and ad-supported, while those who previously purchased Trillian for iPhone will be able to get rid of the ads.

“If you’ve already purchased Trillian for iPhone in the past, your account has been automatically upgraded to ad-free status,” Cerulean reveals.

Those who purchased an ad-free client with free upgrades will continue to receive an ad-free client with free upgrades, while the ad-free status goes with the user across all mobile platforms, such as Android or BlackBerry.

Trillian Pro customers will continue to pay to enjoy using cloud history.

“We’re already hard at work on an amazing new version of Trillian for iPhone, featuring many popular feature requests and some awesome new UI enhancements. Stay tuned, and thanks for supporting Trillian!”, Cerulean Studios concluded.
