Beats' acquisition of MOG is starting to make some sense, as it looks like the headphone maker is indeed working on a streaming service to launch sometime next year. MOG was acquired mostly for its technology, as music licenses are not transferable in a sale like this. Most likely, Beats was interested in using it to accelerate plans to launch its own service. The latest info comes from an unlikely source, it seems that Nine Inch Nails frontman Trent Reznor is affiliated with the project, which is codenamed Daisy.
The service will offer music streaming, but with a big focus on curation, both algorithm and human based. Arguably, that's the current low point of any on-demand streaming service.
That said, everyone from Spotify to Deezer is boasting about their recommendation algorithms, but no one has cracked this particular problem or come up with a decent solution.
