Los Angeles mayor Eric Garcetti has spoken out on Twitter about the protests following the “not guilty” verdict in the George Zimmerman trial.

As reported earlier, riots formed after Zimmerman was acquitted in the shooting death of 17-year-old Trayon Martin. The murder was an act of self-defense, the all-women jury ruled.

"Nonviolence is a powerful & just weapon..It is a sword that heals," Garcetti posted on Twitter, quoting Dr. Martin Luther King Jr.

LA Times relays his plea for protesters to "exercise 1st Amendment and practice peace in City of Angels tonight."

The 10 Freeway was closed down in the Mid-City area from 6:20 p.m. to 6:44 p.m. on Sunday, July 14. Police have made an arrest in the case, but demonstrations continue.
